Household mold is a very common problem in many modern homes. Molds can thrive anywhere there is a source of constant moisture, from condensation, steam, leaks or other sources. There are thousands of variety of mold, and most are harmless. However, mold can damage the materials it grows on, and many people experience allergies to molds. Moreover, some types of mold are dangerous.

One of the most dangerous molds, also very common, is called Stachybotrys chartarum, and known colloquially as Black mold. Black mold has been linked to infant deaths, by way of lung damage. Black mold can cause respiratory bleeding, rashes, seizures and other ill-effects. Usually, it will only affect people with an immunue deficiency, however, breathing in the spores regularly can cause a break down in health over a period of time.

Mold can grow on all kinds of materials, from tile grout to fabric, to wood, wallboard and plaster. That means, given the right condition, our homes can become a breeding ground for mold. Particularly in homes that are sealed air-tight can mold become a problem, if moisture is introduced. Even an improperly balanced air-conditioning system can lead to mold growth.

In most cases, removal of mold is as easy as using a sturdy brush and some bleach or white vinegar. However, in the case of black mold, extreme caution must be used to ensure that the spores do not become airborne so that they can be breathed in, or settle into another part of the house to grow again. Often, in flood-damaged houses, all wall board is stripped away, and wood structures are treated before new wallboard is put back. This can be very expensive, and dealing with mold is one of the big costs to insurance companies after a flood.
